As Australia speeds up efforts to bring more digital ID to its citizens, outside players such as Mastercard and Thales are helping with data and mobile driver’s license programs in that country.

Described as the first true mobile national ID effort, the Mi Argentina mobile app is taking its place alongside the country’s traditional and mandatory national ID documentation program.

Chinese citizens are required to use their national ID cards for a variety of tasks and service. A test set to expand across the country seeks to create virtual ID cards tied to the accounts of WeChat, one of the most popular apps in the world.

The tiny island in the Indian Ocean has started to deploy a national ID card that also functions as a driver’s license, and a bank, health and insurance, payment and passport card. The project comes as other countries in Africa and Asia move forward with multi-application IDs.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of Estonia, the Asian country is expanding a service that enables consumers to more efficiently fill in digital forms for government services, while at the same time testing tokens for better security. The country’s planned national digital ID also could include services that appeal to the private sector.
