The physical access control market has never been known to be bleeding edge when it comes to new technology. But a change is on the horizon, cloud-based physical access control systems have arrived. These new systems offer a number of advantages over legacy systems and could usher a new age of security.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is, from a security perspective, broken. Targets of IoT hacks include smart phones and TVs, thermostats, refrigerators, home routers, and printers. Businesses and governments looking to add the IoT to their digital ecosystems must consider if their identity platform can handle the challenges that come with it.

The Internet of Things has a lot of promise, connected cars that can turn on the lights and unlock the front door and smart refrigerators that display the family calendar, suggest recipes and send images to a smartphone showing what food is in the fridge are all existing developments. But as promising as this is, when your smart home is under attack by unknown forces, the IoT takes on a much darker hue. Digital security and privacy issues are a serious concern as the growing incidence of hacks and data breaches expose the vulnerabilities of IoT.

Data breaches are common and even a risk-based, multi-layered defense isn’t perfect. The problem with protecting data will be more of an issues as an increasing number of devices come online with the IoT. Biometrics will play an important role in securing all this data in the future with this new identity ecosystem.

At the same time, the IoT opens the door to new threats to information privacy. The vision for the information superhighway has come true, but sadly it’s creating a number of new IoT-related on-ramps that cybercriminals can use.
