Zipcar releases iPhone app for on the go car rentals
Zipcar, a Boston based online car rental service, has just released a new iPhone application that enables users to locate and reserve nearby rental vehicles on the go, as well as unlock the vehicle using their phone.
Zipcar works basically like a car share program, granting registered users access to cars parked in various central locations. When a Zipcar member needs a car (you can sign up online), he or she can browse available rentals on Zipcar’s Web site and make a reservation. Zipcar vehicles are unlocked and ready to drive with a tap of an RFID-enabled membership card on the windshield.
With the iPhone app, this whole process can be achieved on the go. The application allows you to view all available cars relative to your position on a GPS map. For those users who forgot their membership card, an iPhone with the app will unlock the door for you. And if you’re wandering the lot where the vehicle is parked, the app will cause the rental’s horn to sound remotely.
The app is now available on the Apple App Store, free to download for existing Zipcar members.
