RFID and wireless handhelds or PDAs?
Yes, sooner than you think.
“We’ve extended the best features from this chipset to meet the stringent needs of the RFID marketplace over the next several years,” Haresh Patel, senior vice president of sales and marketing for WJ Communications. “By integrating the WJC200 chipset directly into handhelds, PDAs and printers, customers are afforded a significant cost-reduction which enables them to scale their production from thousands to millions of units for item-level tracking worldwide.”
RFID Gen 2 Reader: WJ Unveils Industry’s First Gen 2 RFID Reader Chipset Targeted For Consumer And Enterprise Mobile Devices
WJ Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ- WJCI), a leading designer and supplier of radio frequency (RF) products and solutions for the wireless infrastructure and radio frequency identification (RFID) reader markets, today announced it has successfully developed a groundbreaking RFID UHF Silicon (Si) reader chipset. The WJC200 is the industry’s first RFID-reader chipset that meets the ECPglobal Gen2/ISO18000- 6C and ISO18000-6B international standards. This low-cost reader chipset is an excellent candidate for RFID-enabled mobile and stationary printers, readers, PDAs, and Handheld devices. WJ has adopted this RFID chipset as its technology flagship for its next generation, smaller form factor line of RFID modules to provide a lower cost of ownership to our customers. This is the first in a series to be developed in the 2007 wave of new RFID products.
“We’ve extended the best features from this chipset to meet the stringent needs of the RFID marketplace over the next several years. This technological breakthrough leverages our 12+ years at the RFID system level, and our nearly 50 years of RF silicon proficiency to design a state- of-the-art silicon reader chipset,” said Haresh Patel, senior vice president of sales and marketing for WJ Communications. “By integrating the WJC200 chipset directly into handhelds, PDAs and printers, customers are afforded a significant cost-reduction which enables them to scale their production from thousands to millions of units for item-level tracking worldwide. The WJC200 exemplifies an “engine inside” approach to high performance, small form factor modules suitable for current and future supply chain management applications.”
WJC200 Performance Advantages
The WJC200 greatly simplifies UHF reader designs with transmit preamble and data encoding and modulation, frequency-agile carrier generation, and downconversion and decoding all incorporated into a single chip with minimal external components. The on-chip protocol engine supports ISO18000-6B and ISO18000-6C (also known as EPCglobal Generation 2); support for other RFID protocols is possible using external controllers. In ISO18000-6C operation, Tari values of 6.25, 12.5, and 25 microseconds, and tag link frequencies from 40 to 240 KHz are available. The WJC200 also enables Dense-Reader- Mask-compliant transmission. The on-chip synthesizer supports operation within the 902-928 MHz US ISM band; with the aid of an external VCO, the frequency range is extended from 860-960 MHz, encompassing all major RFID frequency bands.
