Watchdata has announced that more than 2.5 million units of its SIMpass mobile proximity payment solution have been delivered in China.
SIMpass is an NFC bridging solution for that enables a normal mobile phone to perform a variety of contactless functions, including payment, banking, loyalty and access control.
According to Watchdata, there are now more than 2.5 million SIMpass cards issued in 20 cities and provinces in China, including Beijing, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangsu.
“While the industry is awaiting NFC or UICC SWP to become ubiquitous, we believe SIMpass will continue to have its place to enable a broader adoption and faster realization of the vision inspired by NFC,” said Michael Yu, president of Watchdata’s International Business Operations.
In a recent survey by China Telecom, more than 32% of 1,000 respondents said that they made the switch to China Telecom because of the mobile payment applications offered. Payments for public transport and supermarket purchases ranked as top applications. Sixty percent of those surveyed rated convenience and security as critical when they chose their mobile payment apps.
