Visa has released its London 2012 Olympics NFC and contactless usage statistics, where the company offered the unique opportunity to showcase the potential of contactless payments to its partners and members from all around the globe, according to NFC World.
Visa staff, partners, Visa-sponsored athletes and journalists all issued with their Samsung Galaxy S III NFC phones equipped with a Visa mobile app used their devices to make an average of fifteen transactions each during the London 2012 Olympics.
In the ten weeks leading up to and including the London 2012 Olympic Games, the number of contactless transactions in the United Kingdom (UK) doubled. There was six times the number of contactless transactions during Games time as there were during the same period in 2011.
“The response has been extremely positive and our priority now is on turning that enthusiasm into commercial mobile payment deployments across Europe,” says Visa’s Mary Carol Harris, adding that “By 2020 we expect that half of all transactions over our network will be through a mobile device. We recognize that the journey is a marathon, not a sprint.”
