UK taps Unisys for passport biometrics
Unisys Corporation has been selected by Her Majesty’s Passport Office to implement its new facial recognition system.
The biometric system aims to increase efficiency within the application process by automating manual operations to analyze facial data and identify issues associated with passport applications.
Under the terms of the five-year agreement, Unisys will provide systems integration services to implement its open standards Library of Electronic ID Artifacts platform, which will manage identity verification for United Kingdom passport applicants based on their facial biometric data.
Cubic inks add-on deal for Clipper card
Cubic Transportation Systems received a $7.5 million add-on contract with the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to expand the Clipper card fare payment system to more than a dozen suburban transit agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area. The system is designed to enhance travel options for commuters in parts of the East and North Bay.
The agencies joining Clipper later this year include the Marin Transit, Napa VINE, SolTrans, Fairfield and Suisun Transit (FAST), Rio Vista Delta Breeze and Vacaville City Coach bus systems, as well as San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Vallejo-San Francisco route.
By the end of 2015, it will extend to the Livermore-Amador Valley Transit Authority (Wheels) bus network and County Connection, Western Contra Costa Transit Authority (WestCAT) and Eastern Contra Costa Transit Authority (Tri-Delta Transit) bus systems. Santa Rosa CityBus, Sonoma County Transit, Cloverdale Transit, Petaluma Transit and Healdsburg Transit systems will be integrated by spring of 2016.
Today, Bay Area commuters use Clipper to pay fares on almost half of the region’s transit trips. The reloadable smart card enables the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Alameda-Contra Costa Transit (AC Transit), Golden Gate Transit & Ferry, San Francisco Bay Ferry, SamTrans (San Mateo County Transit District), Caltrain and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) riders to transfer from one agency to another by simply touching the card to the reader on buses and light-rail vehicles, or at rail stations or ferry terminals – using one card to pay for all rides.
