The Tenuta dell’Ornellaia estate in Tuscany plans to equip its range of various wines with RFID tags to prevent product pirates, according to Wein-Plus.com.
The bottles will be equipped with RFID to supports two functions: the trace of distribution throughout the supply chain and to prevent any black market activity and guaranteeing authenticity of its products.
The RFID tags will be placed into the bottle labels, and each will be allocated a separate unique identification number for track and trace purposes. The RFID number is also printed on the label for manual reading, if necessary.
Currently, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia’s has select bottles equipped with the RFID system. But officials say if the system proves successful in practice, that its entire production of wines will soon be equipped with RFID.
