Tulane University is in the process of distributing new Splash Cards to its students that aim to provide additional benefits and security measures to students, according to a campus news report.
The new cards will no longer use students’ Social Security numbers. Instead, students have been issued new ID numbers. The new cards will also sport Sony Felica contactless smart card chips, so students can simply wave their student ID to make purchases instead of swiping them.
Campus officials say the technology is to help reduce long lines and cut down damage to magnetic strips, thus enabling the cards to last longer.
The new cards will still have magnetic strips, in addition to the new chips, to account for the time it will take to convert all readers to support the new technology.
The new cards become operational during the fall semester of 2010.
