Having an open communication channel with a license-issuing government agency brings the opportunity for a wide array of mobile uses. There would be no need to carry physical documents for your licenses and permits. Renewals, payments and appointments could all be managed via a mobile app. It’s far more convenient for the citizen, and issuing agencies will need less office space and fewer people to handle relatively simple, repeat transactions.

“Convenience is extremely important, and in my opinion, this will be one of the main drivers of adoption,” says Javier Ramirez, Sales Director Europe for Citizen ID Solutions for HID Global. “It’s also far more secure because if you lose your phone, your credentials can be revoked and replaced immediately.”
Here are Ramirez’ top five applications of mobile ID technology beyond a mobile driver’s license:
- Safe passage. “That is a document that is paper-based today – it’s issued in an emergency when you have a passport stolen or lost. It enables you to return to your home country. Going mobile for this type of document saves both the citizen and the issuer time. You don’t need to go to the police or the embassy, etc. You don’t need to ruin your holidays.”
- Health ID. “With a mobile ID, you could receive prescriptions remotely, access your medical history and share it with a different doctor. You could even receive your results from a medical test on your mobile phone.”
- Any document providing a public service. “Mobile IDs are ideal to prove eligibility for public services or to pay taxes or receive social welfare services. They can also secure access to high value or personal online public services like social welfare or revenue services.”
- Permits for everything from fishing to passports. “I think all these types of IDs can go together. Of course, we have the most important ID documents in the world that I’m sure little by little will follow this mobile trend – passports, electronic IDs, and residence permits. For all these government-issued privileges, mobile IDs will be much more secure than a piece of paper.”
- Renting a car. “Renting a car with this type of document will become much easier. If I arrive and they just communicate with my phone, all those data elements go to their system, and of course I know the data I’m sharing.”
