Canadian service provider TELUS has announced that it will use Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC SIM cards to store multiple credentials in their mobile phone SIMs.
A Europay MasterCard Visa (EMV) compliant technology, the SIMs will enable customers to make secure payments, participate in loyalty programs, validate transit passes and redeem coupons using the secure credentials. The SIMs will operate on TELUS smartphones equipped with tap-and-go NFC and LTE capabilities.
Gemalto’s UpTeq NFC SIM safeguards credit and other payment credentials while maintaining the same level of security as chip payment. UpTeq’s embedded software has achieved compliance and security certification meeting specifications laid out by American Express, MasterCard and Visa standards. To accompany the NFC functionality, UpTeq SIMs also feature built-in LTE capabilities that are fully operable with existing networks.
The Canadian mobile market is ideally positioned for NFC-based credential solutions as the country boasts a mature contactless ecosystem as well as one of the world’s highest contactless points of sale penetration rates.
