Swiss railway companies Rhätische Bahn and Wengernalpbahn have deployed active track and trace RFID from Albis Technologies to monitor when and where, and how often their passenger or freight cars and locomotives are used.
The solution includes Albis Technolgies’ TrainTracer transponders and readers from the Zone Monitoring & Find (ZOMOFI) product family. TrainTracer tags can be bolted or riveted directly on to the metal underbody of the railroad car or locomotive. Trigger/reader units are also installed at selected locations in a railroad network and equipped with an interface to the operator’s IT network, as well as hand-sized active RFID transponders on the cars and locomotives.
This system allows companies to collect data to improve maintenance and management of their stock. Companies are able identify each individual car in sequence almost instantly, automatically and at speeds of 160+ km/h (~99 mph).
Information on each and every car and train is therefore available at any time: last passage at the selected locations, distance traveled per day, month, or year and the travel sequence of cars.
