Smart cards to help in the fight against prescription drug abuse

The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Health is planning to launch a new smart card program that aims to prevent prescription drug addiction among young people.
As reported in The National, addiction to prescribed painkillers such as Tramadol is on the rise, particularly among school-age children and university students.
The Ministry’s health smart card will keep a record of all the prescriptions a person has and is intended to prevent someone from going to multiple medical centers and stockpiling many prescriptions.
Technical aspects of the program are currently being worked out.
