Siemens RFID monitors medicine, sensitive freight

DB Schenker now uses RFID technology from Siemens to continuously monitor the temperature of its sensitive air freight, such as medicines.
Siemens together with its partners developed the system that continuously monitors products with the help of RFID chips. The chips feature an integrated temperature sensor, which provides important data about the condition of a product.
If the temperature exceeds or falls below the predefined limit, an LED indicates to and alerts recipients that the contents may have been damaged upon opening the package. To find out for certain, the recipient places the chip in a reader, which transfers the data to a computer for verification.
The chip boasts a battery life as long as three years with a sensor is sealed watertight and resistant to X-rays as well as voltages of 18 kilovolts. The robust chip can also withstand falls from a height of 1.5 meters without damage.
