Shanghai has begun using RFID technology to curb counterfeit taxis and protect both passengers and taxi drivers, according to FutureGov.
Authorities of Shanghai have put an RFID-enabled electronic license on each of the 50,000 taxis in the city. The tag will contain information including license plate number, engine number, color of the taxi, and details of the operating license.
Law enforcement personnel will be able to scan the taxi using a handheld device and instantly determine whether the taxi is licensed and deemed legal.
Since the gradual roll-out of the system, approximately 271 “clone” taxis have been detained by the authorities.
