SEPTA delays smart card system again

For the third time, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority has extended its deadline for vendors to submit proposals for implementing a smart card fare system to replace tokens and paper tickets for its buses, subways, trolleys, and trains. The new deadline for a system that could include credit cards and cell phones is Aug. 18, five months later than the original March 17 date.
SEPTA says it wants a system, expected to cost $100 million, that will allow passengers to use credit cards, prepaid SEPTA cards, and even cell phones to pay for their trips.
