SCM Microsystems has announced the launch of its SCM3712 NFC reader module, a compact add-on designed to enable NFC functionality for a wide range of commercial devices, such as handheld card readers, POS terminals and vending machines.
According to SCM, the reader module plugs into an existing device via USB to make it NFC ready and enable contactless, secure data exchange for cashless payments, ticketing, electronic ID, loyalty and other applications.
The SCM3712 supports ISO 14443, FeliCa, NFC peer-to-peer functionality, and is fully capable of handling NFC Forum-compliant tags based on MIFARE, FeliCa and Topaz technology as well as NFC-enabled mobile phones or other devices, says SCM.
SCM says they will include the module in their NFC Software Development Kit (SDK) for application developers. Due for a mid 2011 launch, the SDK will also feature NFC Forum Tags as software, drivers and tools.
