Banco Santander, the Spanish arm of Santander Group, has teamed up with Orange to develop the first mobile wallet that supports both Visa and MasterCard issued accounts.
According to NFC World, Santander’s mobile wallet will enable customers to load their Visa and MasterCard credit and debit cards onto their mobile phones to make NFC payments wherever payWave and PayPass are accepted.
The service will be tested at Santander’s Madrid headquarters as well as in Madrid’s Boadilla del Monte area ahead of a wider rollout. According to NFC World, participants will be given NFC-enabled BlackBerry phones to make purchases with any Visa or MasterCard account of their choosing at restaurants, retail stores or vending machines.
In addition to payments, the service will also enable users to access their accounts through Santander’s mobile banking platform, as well as tap smart posters to receive information services.
Partners for the project include mobile network operator Orange, Oberthur Technologies, Redsys, Ingenico, RIM, Visa and MasterCard.
