The Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies (RUSNANO) has announced plans to begin production of RFID tags in Russia. The planned production business will be a partnership with the Italian firm Galileo Vacuum Systems.
Under the terms of the partnership, RUSNANO and Galileo will create a jointly-owned business based in Russia, with production facilities in Russia, Italy and Serbia. The new company will also hold the intellectual property rights for any technology developed as part of the venture. The planned cost of the project is roughly $60 million (U.S.). RUSNANO will contribute just under half of the funding.
RUSNANO has previously established a working group to study and develop the RFID market in Russia. Members of this group include representatives from X5 Retail Group and Sitronics.
As part of the production effort, the company will deploy a specialized nanotechnology application to create selective metallization coatings. This technology enables the metallization of any flexible surface. This will create a secondary product line for the business, metallized film and paper for packaging; currently, Russia imports nearly 100 percent of the metallized packaging it uses.
