The city of Regina, Saskatchewan is planning to install new smart card fare boxes on city buses, according to The Leader-Post.
Transit officials hope to have the new fare boxes in place by November, which will accept both cash and new contactless ‘R’ cards.
The R cards can be loaded with cash, tickets and/or passes, and eventually will grant the holder access to other city-owned amenities, such as recreation centers.
The city is also planning to implement incentive programs such as Air Miles or discounted fares to reward frequent travelers.
Additionally, the new system will give Transit Officials updates on which bus routes are being used and in what frequency, so as to help optimize the service’s efficiency.
