The Philippines Senate approved Senate Bill 1030 to required all qualified voters to register to vote with biometrics, reports GMA News.
Senator Lito Lapid authored the bill, which would require all registered voters who are not currently registered with biometrics to go to the election officers and submit photographs, fingerprints, signatures and other identifiable features. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will store this data in its automated election system.
This effort intends to cut down and hopefully eliminate voter fraud.
Voters will be given notice that they need to submit their information before the 2013 elections, or else the Election Registration Board will deactivate them. Deactivated voters will get the chance to reactivate their voting status after submitting the proper information.
