Pakistan eyes smart IDs that double as debit cards

Ali Arshad Hakeem, the chairman of Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), announced plans to issue smart ID cards that would double as contactless ATM and debit cards, according to geo-tv.com.
The announcement to add payment capabilities via smart chip to Pakistan’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) came at the inaugural session of the Pakistan Branchless Banking Conference at SBP Learning Resource Center.
At the conference, Hakeem stated the idea came from distributing financial aid to victims of terrorist attacks in Malakand.
