Onity and RMS join forces to make student check-in and key encoding quick as a click

Electronic lock provider Onity and Residential Management Systems have created a new interface for the 80 colleges using their services which slashes in half the check-in time for students first arriving on campus. Before the streamlined interface was implemented, students went through a two-step process before they could receive their encoded key cards for residence hall and building access.
ATLANTA–Onity, the leading provider of electronic facility control solutions, and Residential Management Systems (RMS), a supplier of sophisticated and integrated residential management software, announced that universities and colleges with both systems in place will have a new, time-saving interface available to them starting in mid-May 2006.
“The new interface is instantaneous,” says Andrew Tanner, vice president of sales and marketing for RMS. “The process takes a maximum of 20-30 seconds, whereas before, it would take around a minute; this can lead to several extra hours when you’re looking at thousands of students.”
Before the interface, students went through a cumbersome, two-step process upon arriving at school, in which they first would check in through the RMS software, and then receive their encoded key cards for residence hall and building access through Onity’s system.
The separate systems created room for human error. When a student was assigned a room number during check-in, it was possible for the person managing key encoding to enter the wrong one or for a student to relay an incorrect number-resulting in mismatched records.
“The Onity-RMS interface is the first of its kind,” said Onity’s Vice President of Business Development Adam Yapkowitz. “We at Onity know that student check-in can be a tedious process for both students and housing staff, and we are constantly looking for new ways to help them streamline the process so we can make it more effective for our customers.”
