Omnitrol Networks has released an update of its flagship software platform, Edge Applications and Services Engine (EASE), along with a new middleware appliance. The new appliance, called the OMNITROL-A or the Nano, is billed as the industry’s smallest middleware appliance for RFID and sensor networks.
Version 2.1 of EASE includes a new version of the OMNITROL Service Development Kit enabling quicker development of customer-defined business processes. Also included in the update are an enhanced Emulator to simulate sensors and RFID devices in order to develop, test and monitor system implementations; and integration with new databases and ERP applications to enable smooth collaboration with customer legacy environments. Finally, the software now offers support for two appliances, the OMNITROL-M and the new OMNITROL-A.
The OMNITROL-A, also known as the OMNITROL NANO, is a middleware appliance scaled to fit smaller deployment situations, where a limited number of RFID readers are needed. It is about a third the size of 1U rack-mountable server, and consumes less than 30 watts of electricity, the equivalent of an energy saving light bulb. The device includes serial interfaces, and has no fan or moving parts.
