Oberthur Technologies has announced that its trusted service manager (TSM) platform has been adopted by Australian bank Westpac for its new NFC payments pilot.

Using Oberthur’s solution, Westpac will be able to securely issue personalized MasterCard debit cards to the SIM card of pilot participants’ Android handsets. Once the debit card has been issued, customers can pay for goods simply by tapping their phone against a contactless payment reader at the point of sale – no other hardware required.

The pilot will involve some 100 Westpac employees using Samsung Galaxy S III handsets to make payments at various merchant partners over a three month period.
