As biometric forms of ID, authentication and access gain more traction, the industry is producing more innovators, leaders and mentors — many of them women. And now the call has gone out to recognize those biometric industry stars.
Nominations will be accepted through April 24 at womeninbiometrics.com.
The 2020 Women in Biometrics Awards will be presented at the 2020 SIA GovSummit, and the organizations behind that event — scheduled for June 2 and 3 in Washington, D.C. — are now seeking nominations for awardees.
“Biometric technologies are fundamental to securing physical and digital identities in today’s society and to helping protect our cities, businesses, schools and citizens,” says SIA CEO Don Erickson. “The innovative women recognized each year as Women in Biometrics award winners have made incredible advancements toward creating a more secure world through guiding this crucial technology market, and SIA looks forward to welcoming the next class of awardees to this elite group.”
The awards program, focused on biometric and security identity technologies and programs, started in 2015 and was co-founded by the Security Industry Association (SIA) and SecureIDNews. The June biometrics awards program is co-presented with sponsors IDEMIA, Biometric Update and the SIA Women in Security Forum. Past winners have included women from a variety of areas such as government, academia, system integrators, peripheral suppliers, I.T. departments and other organizations and companies. Winners have come from the United States and around the globe.
According to SIA, each nominee should display at least one of the following traits via their work with biometric technology: Leadership (defined as “substantive and defining leadership in academic, public awareness, legislative and/or standards efforts); participation (defined as “efforts that go above and beyond individual company walls and into the larger identity sphere”); innovation (defined as “pioneering product development, innovation or corporate startup efforts”); and mentoring (defined as “industry involvement sharing expertise and mentoring peers, thus growing the market”).
Nominations will be accepted through April 24 at womeninbiometrics.com.
What people are saying about the awards program:
“Since we launched the Women in Biometrics Awards in 2015, the program has recognized more than 20 entrepreneurs, scientists and visionaries guiding the biometric identity and security industry,” says Chris Corum, publisher of SecureIDNews. “When we started, biometrics was an emerging technology. Today it is a key tool securing modern society, and female leaders are charting the course.”
“IDEMIA has been an enthusiastic sponsor of the Women in Biometrics Awards since 2015, and we are proud to have many highly-skilled and deserving women at IDEMIA selected to represent the industry over the years,” said Ed Casey, chief executive officer of IDEMIA’s business in North America. “IDEMIA wouldn’t be the technology leader it is today without the women on our team and women everywhere working to advance the science of biometrics. They inform, inspire and encourage us. We are honored to partner with SIA and SecureIDNews to recognize their contributions.”
“Biometric Update is proud to support the Women in Biometrics Awards both to advance the role of women in this important and fast-growing STEM area and to improve the breadth of perspectives at play in the identity ecosystem,” said Biometric Update Editor Chris Burt. “Identification and identity-proofing systems must work for everyone in order to be truly effective, and the way to ensure that is by encouraging inclusive teams and product development.”
