Ford Motor Co. is now offering a new option called Tool Link, an upgrade for pickup trucks that uses RFID technology to help workers keep tabs on their tools.
Drivers who choose the Tool Link option are given 50 RFID tags to affix to equipment of their choosing. The tagged equipment is monitored via two RFID antennas that are installed in the truck bed. A touch screen computer monitor built into the dashboard tells the user whether all the equipment is on board or if something was left on the job site.
The package also includes an RFID scanner and software for creating a database. The Tool Link option, which Ford developed alongside industrial machine manufacturer DeWALT, costs $1,500.
