New York transit slowly migrating to smart cards

Since New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority tapped Jay Walder as its chairman and chief executive officer, it has begun speeding up migration to a new smart card system. Walder helped launch London’s Oyster card a few years ago.
The agency is pushing forward with the next phase of its program that will enable riders to pay by tapping their credit or debit card, or a prepaid key fob, on the turnstile. No MetroCard will be required. Later this year, NYC Transit will install smart card readers on eight city bus lines that service more than 175,000 riders daily. J
