The National Transport Authority of Ireland has combined the student travel card and the integrated transport Leap card to give up to 50,000 Irish students easy access to all forms of public transport. Leap is Dublin’s version of the London Oyster Card.
The new student smart card will enable students to gain discounted Leap card fares on DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit), commuter rail and Dublin’s bus system.
“This will make public transport more attractive to students,” said Alan Kelly, public and commuter transport minister. “There is no additional charge for having a Leap card as part of your student travel card and it can be used right across the public transport system within the Greater Dublin Area,” he added.
The move comes 10 months after Leap went live, with 350 retail shops, as well as an online Web shop supporting the new system.
