A professor at Clarkson University has created software technology to determine whether or not fingerprints taken as biometric readings are fake, reports the Watertown (N.Y.) Daily Times.
Stephanie Schuckers, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the university has developed the software, which is now a business called NexID. The software can determine if prints taken with a fingerprint scanner are real.
The software will help authenticators get around the increasing problem of people undermining biometrics technology, which is thought to be impervious, as biometrics are unique to an individual. However, Schuckers says biometric counterfeiting does occur.
Schuckers is also the director Clarkson’s biometric research group, the Center for Identification Technology Research.
