A new certificate-based public key infrastructure (PKI) credential for Microsoft Minidriver environments is available from Identiv. The uTrust MD Smart Card is the latest addition to the company’s high-security credential portfolio, and it is targeted at converged physical and logical access control environments.

They are ideal for IT security departments in small-to-medium size organizations that want to deploy smart cards to protect data on their network as well as employee’s computers

The card is compatible with Microsoft’s Smart Card Base CSP, a cryptographic service provider integrated into the Microsoft Windows operating system. “The Minidriver-compatible smart cards can support Microsoft-compatible security applications, including Windows Domain Log-On, Virtual Private Network (VPN), Outlook® email signing and encryption, secure web access, and Wireless LAN authentication,” according to a company release.

“uTrust MD Smart Cards simplify any smart card deployment in Microsoft Windows,” said Stephane Ardiley, Identiv Director of Product Management, Credentials and Transponders. “(They) are ideal for IT security departments in small-to-medium size organizations that want to deploy smart cards to protect data on their network as well as employee’s computers.”

The cards are recognized by the Minidriver library on the user’s computer, and once installed, uTrust MD Smart Cards are immediately functional in the Windows OS environment. By adding other identification technologies to the card, applications beyond Windows security can be achieved. Dual-interface cards, contact, contactless, or proximity versions are available.
