The Nigerian Minister of Power, Berth Nnaji, announced that workers at the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) will have to use biometric identification verification if they want to receive their paychecks, according to a Next article.
Nnaji is pushing the requirement of the unionized workers as it was part of an agreement for a 50% increase in the salaries of the workforce.
Part of the reasoning for using the biometric system is due to tight finances at PHCN. The organization also needs to ascertain how many workers are with the organization so it can get a better idea of how hard the salary increases will hit the budget.
While Nnaji insists that the push for biometrics is fair because all workers on the government’s payroll have enrolled in the system, including the minister, the National Union of Electricity Employees insists that the program should be restricted to casual workers.
