Microsoft is said to be working on a version of its Windows Phone software that will enable mobile contactless payments via NFC, according to Bloomberg Businessweek. Two anonymous people familiar with the plans told Bloomberg that the new operating system, Windows Phone 7, may make its debut on devices as early as this year.
Microsoft is reportedly introducing NFC to “narrow” Google’s lead in handset software. According to consulting firm IDC, Google currently holds 39.5% of the mobile OS market with Android, while Microsoft holds only 5.5%.
Microsoft now has 14 patents on NFC technology, the most recent of which was awarded on March 22, according to Bloomberg.
