MetroCard for bus, subway, train fare in New York on tap

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority could be fast-tracking a new contactless fare card for subways and buses by 2011. The MTA could offer a new MetroCard or partner with a bank or credit card company as it did for a subway pilot that it conducted a couple years ago. If a credit or debit card is used, the fare would come right out of the rider’s account.
In addition, the MTA, Port Authority and New Jersey Transit have expressed interest in a card that’s good across the city’s borders.
