Moldova chooses Gemalto for its national ePassport
Gemalto won a multi-year contract to supply next-generation ePassports to the Center for State Information Resources “Registru” in the Republic of Moldova.
Gemalto’s ePassport booklets that the CSIR Registru will use include secure Sealys eTravel embedded software, eCovers and advanced visual security features. Gemalto will also provide support for integration services within the existing document issuance process.
Gemalto’s ePassport for Moldova stores a digital portrait and two fingerprint scans inside the booklet’s contactless microprocessor, delivering secure and reliable authentication of the holder’s identity. The partnership with Moldova will also mark one of the first implementations of Supplemental Access Control (SAC), the latest security mechanism recommended by ICAO and mandated by the EU to protect the access to the data stored in the microprocessor.
Introduction of the new ePassport solution is slated to begin summer 2014, and will replace the previous generation of Moldovan passports, enabling visa-free travel for Moldovan citizens to the European Union.
SecureKey sponsors APIcon’s 2014 Hackathon
SecureKey will be among the sponsors of the APIcon/quest Hackathon, the premier event for developers attending APIcon 2014 in San Francisco.
The company will also showcase its briidge.net Connect Platform and accompanying Mobile SDK, which focuses on replacing static password authentication with dynamic, device-anchored digital IDs. The solution is versatile, with applicability in banking, healthcare, gaming and social network applications.
It is a cloud-based solution that provides strong authentication and supports Android, iOS and WIN/PC ecosystems.
On top of the $15,000 in overall cash prizes being offered by the event organizers, SecureKey is offering an additional $2,000 in prizes and one-year licenses for the SecureKey briidge.net Connect cloud-based digital ID authentication service platform. These prizes will be given to developers whose projects are deemed by SecureKey as “best implementations.”
Developers interested in submitting a best implementation can prepare for the Hackathon by downloading the Mobile SDK from the SecureKey developer website.
Poor password security, privileged access control abound
Lieberman Software’s 2014 Information Security Survey examines IT security professionals’ insights into password, cloud and other current cyber security trends.
Results from Lieberman’s 2014 report suggest a general lack of password security and privileged access control. This could be the result of poor security training or a general lack of IT security awareness resulting from managing complex, large and dynamic enterprise environments.
Whatever the reason, Lieberman stresses that as long as organizations are settling for lax control of their password updates and privileged account management, the chance of data breaches only increases.
Highlight from the report include:
- More than 13% of respondents can still access a previous employers’ systems using their old credentials, with some still able to access two, or more ex-employers’ systems.
- Nearly 1 in 5 of those surveyed don’t have or don’t know if there is a policy in place to ensure that former employers and contractors can no longer access systems after leaving the organization.
- Almost 1 out of 4 respondents work in organizations that do not change their account passwords within the 90-day time frame commonly cited as best practice by most regulatory compliance mandates.
- 80% of surveyed respondents choose to keep their organization’s most sensitive data on their own network, rather than in the cloud.
- Nearly 3 out of 4 surveyed report that the cloud applications their users download cause security headaches.
