The Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) experienced an overwhelmingly large amount of people signing up for the region’s new STAR smart payment card system, according to a local news brief.
The new STAR, “Simply Tap and Ride,” card and ticket is a contactless smart card that will enable JTA riders to pay their bus, trolley and shuttle fare without the need for cash by simply tapping the card on the soon-to-be installed fare boxes.
The transit agency said it was expecting only about 500 people to show up for the first day, but instead got more than 1,500 participants. Unprepared for such a turnout, JTA is extending the sign up for STAR to next week.
The STAR card captures all discount pass programs, benefiting seniors and reduced fare riders. The contactless system not only enhances riding experience, but it also assists with accelerating the boarding process for riders and possibly shortening their travel time.
