Iris biometrics and face recognition merge in Tascent’s new sleek unit
InSight One eases multimodal biometric capture for airports, borders and access control environments

Biometric developer Tascent released its latest device, the InSight One, which combines both iris biometrics and facial recognition in a sleek, compact unit. About the size of a shoebox, the InSight One captures both iris and face images that exceed ISO / ICAO standards. And it does it in just 2 seconds from one-meter distance.
It handles subjects of varying heights without repositioning the device. This makes it ideal for mounting at airport and border checkpoints, sitting on desks at enrollment offices, or attaching to turnstiles at access control environments.
It is fully automated and self-service so the image capture process is easy even for first time users and delivers images.
It also looks great. Unlike most access control or biometric hardware, this device would be a welcomed visual addition to any modern airport or office environment. Customizable LCD and LED user interface, precision-crafted aluminum enclosure, custom color options, and a variety of sleek mounting options give an integrated look in desktop, e-Gate, and kiosk applications.
The device is fully self-contained, providing Ethernet and USB interfaces to integrate with networked, PC-connected, and embedded solutions. Strong encryption is used to protect collected data in-transit and at-rest.
Since its 2015 acquisition of the identity business line and iris biometrics portfolio from AOptix, Tascent has continued research and development in advanced, usable biometric technologies.
This product is the result of years of development that leverages the company’s experience from processing tens of millions of passengers a year through its global deployments, says Joey Pritikin, VP of Marketing and Product Management at Tascent.
“We set out to create a product with the versatility of combined iris and face capture that would change perspectives on usability, performance, and design for biometric systems,” says Pritikin. “It’s unlike anything of its kind.”
It sets the stage for a wide array of next generation applications in consumer travel and border management, access control, financial services, and identity programs.
“The strong growth in international travel, the need to deliver robust services in healthcare, finance, and government, and the melding of our digital and physical worlds, is driving unprecedented demand for biometric authentication,” says CEO Dean Senner. Thus he sees major opportunities for advanced solutions including iris biometrics and the InSight One product.
It is now available for purchase and the company says it has received production orders to deploy InSight One in consumer-facing travel and identity applications in early 2017.
