The Secure Sleeve from Identity Stronghold is the first such privacy protection product to get the nod for PIV card application.
Identity Stronghold’s Secure Sleeve(TM) is First to Receive FIPS 201 Approval
ENGLEWOOD, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sept. 7, 2006–Identity Stronghold announces the Secure Sleeve(TM) electromagnetically opaque sleeve received FIPS 201 approval for use in securing data on Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards. Secure Sleeve is a durable solution that affords privacy protection, protects the card when not in use, and is unobtrusive and inexpensive.
The Secure Sleeve is used as a holder for the PIV card when not in use. It provides a barrier to unknown or unauthorized wireless communications through the contactless interface on the card.
“We are pleased to be the first electromagnetically opaque sleeve approved by GSA for FIPS 201. We look forward to working with agencies and contractors implementing FIPS 201 systems to meet their needs for the electromagnetically opaque sleeve for PIV cards,” states Walt Augustinowicz, COO and founder, Identity Stronghold.
“As the deadline for implementation of the PIV cards comes closer, agencies and suppliers have many critical items to accomplish to meet HSPD 12. The Secure Sleeve is a simple answer to one element of compliance – the electromagnetically opaque sleeve,” states Steve Timchak, retired GSA E-Authentication Program Executive.
The Secure Sleeve is available directly from Identity Stronghold (http://www.idstronghold.com) and will be on GSA schedule shortly.
FIPS 201 requirements for an electromagnetically opaque sleeve:
2.4 PIV Privacy Requirements

Specifically, employ an electromagnetically opaque sleeve or other technology to protect against any unauthorized contactless access to information stored on a PIV credential.
4.4.2 Biometric Data Representation and Protection
An electromagnetically opaque sleeve or other technology is required to protect against any unauthorized contactless access to biometric information stored on a contactless IC.
