SMARTRAC announced the launch of a RFID transponder capable of withstanding gamma radiation exposure of up to 45 kilogray (kGy). Radiation sterilization is often used in the medical industry to destroy the DNA of any micro-organisms which may be present in medical equipments.
The new transponder has been developed based on the SMARTRAC’s S-Tag product family, which comply with the ISO/IEC 15693 standard. The new S-Tag comes at a size of 16mm and with a Fujitsu FRAM chip.
With radiation the gamma rays penetrate through materials and casings, including metal containers, much easier than they can with heat or chemical sterilization methods.
The data does not get affected by the radiation sterilization process due to the chip’s ferroelectric characteristics.
