GSA Approves ImageWare Systems for HSPD-12
SAN DIEGO — ImageWare® Systems, Inc., a leading developer of identity management solutions, announced that the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has approved the company’s secure credential software on the approved product listing (APL) as part of the GSA’s FIPS 201 Evaluation Program (GSA FIPS 201 APL).
“Gaining GSA approval enables us to further supply products to our customers, systems integrators and solution partners seeking to achieve compliance with FIPS 201,” said Jim Miller, ImageWare’s chairman and CEO.
“ImageWare offers various products addressing specific functional requirements, from biometric image capture, biometric identification and verification, to printing and encoding of smart card-based identity credentials. We are pleased with this progress and look forward to gaining additional product placement on the GSA APL.”
ImageWare’s IWS EPI Builder is certified for the Facial Image Capture Camera category which meets all the requirements for systems conducting facial image capture under the HSPD-12 program. The cameras approved to date include the Canon PowerShot A520, A640, G5, G6, and G7 with additional next generation cameras to be approved as they become available.
Beyond the current approval, ImageWare is actively in progress with submissions for approval in the following categories:
-Capture Print Station
-Cryptographic Module
-Electronic Personalization
-Facial Image Capture Middleware
-Fingerprint Image Capture Station
-PIV Card Reader – Authentication Key
-PIV Card Reader – Biometric
-PIV Card Reader – CHUID Authentication (Contact)
-PIV Card Reader – CHUID Authentication (Contactless)
-PIV Card Reader – Transparent
-Single Fingerprint Capture Device
-Template Generator
-Template Matcher
ImageWare previously received approval by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for its PIV Middleware product, which led to approval and placement of this product on the GSA APL. ImageWare now offers PIV Middleware compliant software with additional functionality including IWS™ Desktop Security which is a multi-credential compliant (PIV/TWIC/CAC and others) Logical Access Control System, as well as the foundation of a biometrically enabled Single-Sign-On solution. ImageWare is submitting IWS Desktop Security and anticipates it becoming an additional entry in the PIV Middleware category.
Miller added, “ImageWare remains committed to supplying a complete HSPD-12 solution. We will continue to execute on the requirements for GSA certification specifically around our core products including the IWS™ Biometric Engine™ for biometric enrollment (template generation) and verification (template matcher), and the IWS EPI Card Management System™ for the management of the smart card lifecycle.”

IWS EPI Builder
IWS EPI Builder is recognized as a leading secure credential component of identity management and security solutions, providing all aspects of ID functionality from image and biometric capture to the enrollment, issuance and management of secure documents. IWS EPI Builder is designed specifically to facilitate the production of high-end, secure credential systems and enables organizations to develop custom identification solutions or incorporate sophisticated identification capabilities into existing applications. Components allow users to:
-Capture image, biometric and demographic data
-Enable biometric identification and verification (1:1 and 1:X)
-Support numerous biometric hardware and software vendors
-Develop custom secure credentials
-Encode magnetic stripes, bar codes and smart chips
-Print IDs or other documents including national IDs, passports and access control credentials
-IWS Card Management System
The IWS CMS is a comprehensive solution to support and manage the issuance of smart cards complete with the following capabilities:
-Flexible models of central or distributed issuance of credentials
-Customizable card life-cycle workflow managed by the CMS
-Integration of the CMS data with other enterprise solutions, such as physical access control and logical access control (i.e., Single-Sign-On – SSO)
-Robust encoding capabilities for specific encoding of mandatory data, digital signatures and programs in order to maintain interoperability as well as the security features specified for the cards
IWS CMS includes a PIV Encoder which can be considered to be a complex device driver that properly programs the PIV smart cards and interacts with the CMS for data payload elements. It interacts with the Certificate Authority to encrypt or sign the PIV smart card data with trusted certificates and properly programs the smart card regardless if the system is a standalone encoding device or one integrated into a card printer.
IWS Biometric Engine
The IWS Biometric Engine’s multi-biometric enrollment, management and authentication platform allows users to biometrically search and match populations of unlimited sizes for identity confirmation. Searches can be 1:1 (Verification), 1:N (Identification), X:N (Investigative) and N:N (Population Management). IWS Biometric Engine is technology agnostic, enabling users to employ biometric devices and algorithms from virtually any vendor, as well as support the combination of the following biometric types, including: single fingerprint, Livescan fingerprint, 2D face, 3D face, iris, palm scan, finger vein, palm vein, hand geometry, palm, DNA, signature, voice, and retina. The IWS Biometric Engine currently supports 93 devices and methods of biometric acquisition and 65 biometric algorithms.
IWS Desktop Security
IWS Desktop Security is a flexible, scalable and modular authentication tool that is optimized to enhance network security and usability. It provides an additional layer of security to workstations, networks and systems through advanced encryption and authentication technologies. IWS Desktop Security uses multi-factor authentication methods to protect access, verify identity and help secure the computing environment without sacrificing ease-of-use features such as quick login.
IWS Desktop Security provides the crucial end-point component of a Logical Access Control System (LACS). And when combined with a Physical Access Control System (PACS), organizations benefit from a complete door to desktop access control and security model.
