Government identity credentials hot topics at Smart Cards in Government Conference

HSPD-12, TWIC, Traveler IDs, Real ID and privacy concerns all headline the agenda of the April Smart Cards in Government Conference in Washington, D.C. More than 800 are expected to attend the three day gathering to discuss technology, standards and implementation best practices for government smart card programs.
PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ – Both government identity programs in full swing and new identity programs for 2007 will be hot topics among government and industry leaders at the Smart Card Alliance’s 6th Annual Smart Cards in Government Conference. Government and industry speakers will discuss HSPD-12-driven employee ID cards, the Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) program, and electronic passports (ePassports), as well as upcoming initiatives for cross-border citizen identification cards and the REAL ID reforms for driver’s licenses. The conference will be held April 11-13 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Centre in Washington, DC.
“With large-scale government employee rollouts currently underway and new citizen-facing identification systems being debated at the federal and state level, this is a dynamically changing marketplace,” said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Alliance. “Now is an ideal time for leaders in government and industry to share experiences and lessons learned with the existing implementations, discuss opportunities and challenges ahead, and explore how we can apply this knowledge to newly proposed government identity projects.”
In its sixth year, the 3-day conference is a must-attend event, with more than eight hundred attendees expected to gather in Washington, DC to discuss technology, standards and implementation best practices for government smart card programs. An exhibition hall will feature demonstrations of the latest technology used in government and commercial security and identification systems, including the latest dual-interface smart cards, physical access systems, identity management software, card personalization systems, biometrics and logical access security solutions.
Speakers will include:
– Mary Dixon, deputy director of the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC), on “Department of Defense – Next Steps in Global Deployment.”
– Robert Jacksta, executive director of passenger security and facilitation, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, on “Border Security: Managing Cross-border Identity and Security.”
– Paula Arcioni, Department of Information Technology, State of New Jersey, on “Enabling Electronic Government at the State Level.”
– Ari Schwartz, deputy director, Center for Democracy and Technology, on “Privacy, Technology and Public Policy.”
Business issues, implementation milestones and technology advancements will be explored in presentations on government programs underway, including the government’s HSPD-12 directive for federal and contract employee Personal Identity Verification (PIV) cards, ePassports, the TWIC program involving the U.S. Coast Guard, registered traveler cards coming to dozens of airports, and the first responder authentication credential trials that involve federal, state, and local agencies throughout the country.
Further agenda topics will cover the upcoming year, as new government identity programs that will impact millions of U.S. citizens get underway including the Western Hemisphere Traveler Initiative (WHTI) and REAL ID Act driver’s license reform. Attendees will come away from these presentations with insights into the timetables, opportunities and challenges ahead for government issuers, accreditation and testing authorities, procurement programs and the industry as a whole.
The Smart Card Alliance Educational Institute will host a pre-conference educational workshop on FIPS 201 implementation from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 10th. This full-day workshop is directed at government agency HSPD-12 program leaders and contractors and will include a detailed presentation of the technology and applications roadmap for implementing FIPS 201 compliant federal identity cards.
Additionally, the Federal Smart Card Interagency Advisory Board (IAB) will hold its regular open IAB meeting prior to the start of the conference, from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Wednesday morning, April 11th. This is a bi-monthly gathering of government and private industry leaders to discuss adoption issues; no fee is required to attend. The session will be moderated by Michael Butler, Department of Defense and IAB chairman.
