Gemalto has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Google, HTC, Motorola and Samsung concerning the Android operating system, and associated development tools and products.
The patented technologies concerned in the suit include Gemalto’s JavaCard operating system, which Gemalto stated was developed in the 1990s at the company’s research and developed facility in Texas.
JavaCard runs on SIM and credit cards and allows developers to program using Java as oppose to other low-level programming languages.
“Gemalto’s patented technologies are fundamental to running software, developed in a high level programming language such as Java, on a resource constrained device,” said a Gemalto spokesperson. “This lawsuit is necessary to protect our investment in innovation.”
