GE Interlogix Digital CCTV System Keeps An Eye On Vanderbilt University Law School

Ability to View Campus Grounds Any Time Via Intranet-based Local Area Network Helps Protect People and Property
CORVALLIS, ORE – November 24, 2003—GE Interlogix Video Systems Group (NYSE:GE) today announced that Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tenn. has installed a digital CCTV system to prevent theft and provide heightened security on law school grounds.
After experiencing several thefts, the law school installed 14 GE Interlogix DM1500 fixed cameras along with GE Interlogix combination digital video multiplexer recorders with Ethernet capabilities (DVMRe’s). The system allows officials to monitor live camera feeds from any computer terminal connected to the university’s high-speed local area network (LAN).
“The GE Interlogix video system suits the needs of the campus,” said Vanderbilt Law School Director of Design Development and Management Eve Utley. “We will continue to add cameras as the need arises and we have recommended GE systems to other campus departments as well.”
Cameras are placed in hallways and at the building’s entrances and exits. The school also uses the cameras to confirm the presence of a contract guard service. They are configured to start and stop based on motion detection.
“Connectivity is an extremely important issue for the university,” said Dave Lavell of SEI (Nashville), the dealer/integrator that installed the GE Interlogix system. “All the cameras can be viewed campus-wide on the university’s LAN.” Network managers, the interior designer and the associate dean all have access to view the camera feeds. The Vanderbilt Police Department also has access to the live, networked digital video.
SEI installed WaveReader software with the CCTV system. Using its synchronized four-window image browser with playback speed control, WaveReader software lets Vanderbilt Law School administrators view, enhance, sharpen or enlarge images. It also lets users zoom in on details. In addition, images can be printed or copied to PCs in various time segments. “WaveReader can be used across many computers because of its free license,” Lavell added.
The upgrade to a digital camera system allows university officials to perform easy searches and then simply e-mail digital footage to the appropriate authorities. The university has saved on time and labor costs and has reduced incident response time as a result of installing the digital CCTV, Lavell said.
“Recently, someone shoplifted from the university book store and came through the law school building to get away. A witness at the bookstore provided a description and we were able to locate a picture of the suspect going in and out of the building. Thus, we were able to identify the offender for police,” Utley reported.
With an eyewitness and a photo, police can arrest a suspect, she added.
Many entities at the university are looking into the system, including the police department, the medical center, and the education, transportation and parking departments, Utley said. Currently there is a mix of cameras throughout the campus and some are just moving to digital. Plans for a CCTV system are also underway for the new student union.
