Future of Australian Digital iD initiative may be in question

The primary Australian digital ID initiative known as “Digital iD” may be in question, according to an article in InnovationAus. Funding has apparently been reduced and key team leaders have left the project. Digital iD rolled out early in 2018, and it has been piloted at 13 organizations – including Queensland Police, CUA and Airtasker – and more than 40 companies have registered to participate.
A change at the top of the program’s creator, Australia Post, could be to blame. Ahmed Fahour was CEO and the Australian Digital iD initiative’s champion until late last year but his replacement, Christine Holgate, is reportedly focusing on other more traditional lines of business.
The official response from Australia Post, however, is that all is on track and the changes are simply a reflection of the normal maturation curve of a new technology program.
