Frankfurt, Deutche Bahn to launch interoperable NFC ticketing system
Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV), Frankfurt’s regional transit authority, is merging its NFC infrastructure with the national railway operator, Deutche Bahn, to create an interoperable mobile payments network, according to The Register.
Though still a ways away, the merger will allow travelers to pay for their train tickets and receive timetable and travel information with just a tap of their NFC phone. The service will also make it easier for rail employees to validate tickets.
The new system will combine Deutsche Bahn’s Touch&Travel NFC fare payment scheme and RMV’s HandyTicket ticketing and travel information service, says The Register.
Both operators are already using their respective systems, but with marginal success. With the merger, the operators hope to kick start adoption of NFC services in German train travel.
