EarthSearch Communications International Inc., a specialist in GPS-based solutions, has introduced an asset tracking system, AutoSearch RFID, which combines GPS and RFID technology to enable the detailed tracking of human and property assets in transit.
The solution integrates the two technologies on a hardware level. RFID tags are placed on packages or other assets in transit. The transporting vehicle is equipped with an RFID reader integrated with a GPS unit. The reader collects the information on any tags in range and transmits the data to the GPS unit, which then communicates the information to the EarthSearch server, along with the location and time of the transmission.
The AutoSearch RFID solution offers a system to combat cargo theft, which costs companies $30 billion each year in the U.S. alone. The system sends automatic alerts when tagged cargo is tampered with, or if there is an unauthorized access of a cargo area.
“This removes the human element from reporting an act of theft in progress,” says Kayode A. Aladesuyi, president and CEO of EarthSearch. “Even if a truck driver, for example, is tied up or incapacitated, the system still sends the alert, and law enforcement officials can be dispatched immediately.”
