The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) has teamed up with Dunlop to implement a new RFID-enabled system that ensures that all BTCC cars are using the correct tires at all times.
The BTCC now uses Dunlop tires equipped with RFID tags that are scanned every time a car makes a pit stop. The tire information is relayed to officials via a a computer system developed by Datalinx, granting them the ability to track every tire from production, to their allocation to each team, and finally to their return to Dunlop for recycling.
According to BTCC Series Director Alan Gow, the system marks a welcome change from previous methods: “In just three seasons we have gone from laboriously recording every serial number of every tire used in every practice session and race – and then having to stop each car and visually check them – to having a fully computerized, automated and fool-proof system.”
