DigitalPersona Supports Industry-Compliant Retail POS Systems
REDWOOD CITY, CA — DigitalPersona, Inc., the leading provider of fingerprint authentication solutions for enterprise networks and commercial applications, today announced the availability of a fingerprint reader and associated software targeting a range of retail point-of-sale applications. DigitalPersona’s well recognized U.are.U® Fingerprint Reader and software now support unified point-of-service (UPOS) operating systems that include OPOS (OLE Point of Service) for Windows and Windows Embedded for Point of Service compliant systems. These UPOS compliant devices are being deployed by the world’s leading retail, restaurant and hospitality VARs and application vendors, along with large retail point-of-sale equipment and device manufacturers.
The new DigitalPersona products allow retailers to quickly and easily add DigitalPersona fingerprint readers or modules to their standards-based compliant POS terminals. Fingerprint biometrics enables retailers to deploy cost-saving applications at the register such as employee time and attendance, theft and fraud prevention, and cash drawer loss control.
“In the retail industry, fingerprint biometrics are increasingly being integrated into a variety of point-of-sale systems, so it’s important that we keep a step ahead of market demands for cross-platform solutions,” said Chip Mesec, senior product marketing manager at DigitalPersona. “By adding the convenience of plug-and-play compatibility, we enable the industries’ largest retail developers to easily and securely deploy fingerprint biometrics to their POS terminals and applications.”
Along with the support of the UPOS standard, the U.are.U UPOS for OPOS product works with the Windows XP Pro, XP Embedded and the latest version of the Microsoft Windows Embedded operating system, Windows Embedded for Point of Service, which was designed to support retail POS systems and terminals. Windows Embedded for Point of Service is UPOS compliant and has evolved from a long Microsoft involvement in POS systems.
“We are pleased that DigitalPersona’s U.are.U Fingerprint Reader and software now support Windows Embedded for Point of Service compliant systems,” said Eunice Shin, senior product manager with Windows Embedded at Microsoft Corp. “With support for Windows Embedded for Point of Service, leading retailers and point of sale terminal manufacturers will have access to the benefits of a powerful, flexible and scalable retail solution, enabling transformation of POS systems into next generation ‘smart’ solutions that ultimately deliver enhanced experiences for customers.”
