University officials at the De Montfort University are the considering an alternative method for tracking student attendance, reports to the Leicester Mercury.
The university plans to insert electronic chips into each student ID, which would be read by nearby Wi-Fi access points, or Hotspots. The new technology would effectively enable faculty and staff an automated means to track student attendance and better verify who is present at lectures and seminars.
While there are mixed emotions amongst students, the new plan was discussed and approved by the university’s executive board at a recent meeting.
Some students say the system makes them seem as though they are criminals. A professor from the university responded by stating the new system as the most foolproof way of monitoring attendance.
