The European Union has become the latest government to utilize ID assurance software provided by U.S.-based Daon. Its software will help drive EU’s Biometric Matching System which will eventually serve some 70 million people. Other partners in the project, known as the Bridge Consortium, include Accenture and Sagem.
RESTON, Va.–Daon, a global provider of identity assurance software and services, says its software is being used as the platform for the European Union’s Biometric Matching System (EU-BMS). The EU-BMS serves as the central biometric component of a collection of identity programs for its member countries and will serve up to 70 million people. Daon was awarded the BMS project in partnership with the Bridge Consortium which includes Accenture and Sagem and supplies hardware, software and related services.
Ultimately, the BMS, with a service-oriented architecture, has the capability to serve a number of systems, including those dealing with visas (VIS), immigration, border control and police cooperation (EURODAC, SIS II). Daon brings its industry leading platform to the system providing many strategic benefits including high availability, scalability, open architecture, multi-biometric integration, flexibility, future proofing, security and data integrity.
Commenting on the recent award, Dr. Frank Paul of the European Commission’s Directorate-General Justice, Freedom and Security said, “BMS requires the highest levels of availability and security, in addition to providing state-of-the-art biometric matching at a competitive cost. The selected team used a COTS-based approach that minimized risks and achieved a highly competitive price. Best of all, the resultant BMS architecture is flexible enough to accommodate future requirements as policies and business processes evolve over time.”
According to Daon’s CEO Tom Grissen, “The EU BMS uses a single infrastructure that will deliver services to many applications. This strategic approach is enabled by Daon’s proven technology and the Commission will benefit as both the cost and time to deliver biometric identity capabilities can be dramatically reduced. We are pleased to add the European Union to a growing list of governments around the world who recognize Daon’s platform leadership in the biometrics industry.”
